The National Sports Commission, NSC, has selected Enugu State to host the 23rd National Sports Festival, NSF, in 2026, marking the first time the state will host the event since its inception in 1973.

NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade disclosed that Enugu emerged as the host after a competitive bidding process, pledging a world-class event in the coal city.

Before Enugu, Ogun State will host the 22nd NSF in January 2025, with over 15,000 athletes expected to participate in the Gateway State’s premium sporting event.

The NSF, a biennial event since 1973, fosters sportsmanship and national unity, featuring thousands of athletes from all 36 states and the FCT. Enugu’s selection aligns with international best practices, providing ample time for preparation.

The announcement reflects the NSC’s commitment to maintaining the festival’s legacy of excellence while showcasing Nigerian sporting talent.

National Sports Commission is the Nigerian apex body responsible for regulating sports in the country, with Alhassan Yakmut serving as the last Director-General before it was scrapped by the Muhammadu Buhari government in 2015. It is headed by the Minister of Sports in Nigeria. Its origin dates as far back as 1910 with the creation of empire Day competition.
