The Federal Government of Nigeria is preparing to seek the extradition of Simon Ekpa, the leader of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, a paramilitary group associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
This move follows Ekpa’s recent arrest in Finland on terrorism-related charges, where he is accused of inciting violence and promoting terrorist activities through social media. The Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, expressed optimism about Ekpa’s extradition to Nigeria to face criminal charges, noting that many Nigerians are demanding his return to address allegations of terrorism.

Ekpa has been a controversial figure, closely linked to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently facing serious charges including terrorism and treason. Despite this connection, IPOB has distanced itself from Ekpa, asserting that he does not represent their organization or its goals. They have publicly requested that authorities cease linking them with him.

The Finnish authorities have indicated that Ekpa’s arrest was part of a broader international investigation into terrorism financing. Alongside Ekpa, four other individuals were detained on suspicion of financing terrorist activities. The Finnish Central Criminal Police confirmed that these arrests were made in response to Ekpa’s alleged public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent.

Following his arrest, there has been significant discourse regarding the implications for security in Nigeria’s South-East region, where the ESN has been implicated in various violent incidents. The Nigerian military has expressed satisfaction with the developments, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in combating terrorism and ensuring justice for those affected by Ekpa’s actions.
