Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies, stating that no level of assistance is too much when it comes to safeguarding lives, property, and national assets.
Speaking on Monday at the inauguration of two blocks of 12-flat, 2-bedroom residential buildings for the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, in Port Harcourt, Fubara explained that the state government’s investment in the project underscores its recognition of the critical role played by the Air Force in ensuring security.
The housing project, initiated in 2017 at a cost of ₦212 million, had been abandoned until Fubara’s administration took it up, reviewing the cost to ₦454 million to reflect current economic realities. The project was completed to enhance the welfare of NAF personnel stationed at the 115 Special Operations Group Base in Port Harcourt.
“This project did not start in our administration, but we knew it was important to complete it. Welfare is key to ensuring that our officers perform effectively. The ₦454 million investment is a modest contribution compared to the sacrifices they make daily to secure our state and national assets,” Fubara said.
Governor Fubara emphasized that the state government’s support extends beyond its constituents to include institutions that contribute to the protection of lives and property.
“Our support is not limited to communities that elected us. We must also contribute to the welfare of those protecting our state. From tackling oil theft to safeguarding pipelines, the Air Force plays a vital role. This project is a small token of appreciation for their sacrifices,” he added.

The governor assured the base that other pending requests from the NAF would be addressed, reiterating his administration’s commitment to making the 115 Special Operations Group Base a model facility.
Performing the inauguration, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff, described the project as a testament to the strong partnership between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Air Force.
“This project will improve the quality of life for our personnel and their families, boost morale, and enhance our operational effectiveness. The mutual cooperation between the Nigerian Air Force and the Rivers State Government exemplifies a strong partnership that has bolstered security and economic stability in the region,” Abubakar said.
He also highlighted the Air Force’s contributions to state security, particularly in combating illegal oil bunkering and providing free operational support for state-owned aircraft.
Commissioner for Special Duties, Rowland Obed-Whyte, described the project as monumental, noting its significance in addressing the long-standing welfare needs of NAF personnel.
The commander of the 115 Special Operations Group, Air Commodore Ali H. Idris, applauded Governor Fubara’s leadership, stating that the housing initiative reflects strategic collaboration to enhance the Air Force’s operational readiness and crime-fighting capabilities.
The project underscores the importance of state-level contributions to national security, with the Rivers State Government leading by example in supporting critical institutions that protect lives, property, and economic assets.
