The United States Embassy in Nigeria has updated its immigration visa procedures, requiring applicants to visit the Consulate General in Lagos at least twice starting January 1, 2025.
In an announcement made on Tuesday via its official X page, the embassy stated that all applicants with scheduled interviews after the new year will be required to complete two visits during the immigrant visa process.
The embassy’s statement read, “For applicants with interviews scheduled after January 1, 2025, you are required to visit the Consulate General in Lagos at least twice during the immigrant visa process.” The new requirement aims to better prepare applicants for their interviews and reduce delays in visa processing.
The embassy explained that the first visit will be an “In-Person Document Review” with consular staff. This step is designed to ensure applicants have all necessary documentation ready before their interviews.

The statement mentioned, “This review guarantees that applicants are ready for their visa interviews.” It also added, “The review enables applicants to gather any missing documents before their visa interviews, which helps prevent delays in the processing of applications.”
The second visit will involve an interview with a Consular Officer, the date for which will be set by the National Visa Center , NVC. The embassy emphasized that if applicants fail to complete the In-Person Document Review before their visa interview, they will need to reschedule the appointment.
This update comes shortly after the embassy announced a new visa services provider for its consulates in Abuja and Lagos, effective August 26, 2024, as reported in July 2024. The change was also confirmed through the embassy’s official website and social media channels.
