The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service , Adewale Adeniyi has once again positioned the Service as a global leader in border security and trade facilitation.
During the 18th Africa Security Watch Conference held in Doha, Qatar, the CGC, represented by the National Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, delivered an insightful presentation on the NCS’s achievements in strengthening security and promoting trade.
Speaking on “Protecting National Security Through Effective Border Control: The Nigeria Customs Example,” Adeniyi underscored the importance of border management in national security. He described borders as gateways critical to safeguarding citizens, boosting the economy, and ensuring overall security.
Highlighting the impact of the Nigeria Customs Act 2023, the CGC noted that the legislation has significantly enhanced the Service’s capacity to address emerging security threats, improve efficiency, and foster collaboration.
“Under my leadership, the NCS generated a record-breaking ₦5.1 trillion in revenue, a feat that underscores the agency’s innovative use of technology and improved compliance frameworks”, he disclosed.
He further emphasized that this accomplishment reflects not only the efficiency of the Customs Service but also the resilience and dedication of its workforce.
The CGC also detailed the Service’s intelligence-driven operations, including the interception of arms shipments at Onne Seaport, where 844 rifles and 112,500 rounds of live ammunition were seized.
“These efforts have significantly disrupted the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, which remain a persistent threat to national security,” he stated.

Collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency was highlighted as a key success in intercepting illicit drugs, while efforts in combating wildlife trafficking were showcased through the seizure of 4,200 kilograms of pangolin scales and ivory.
Adeniyi also discussed the impact of Operation Whirlwind, which tackled the smuggling and diversion of petroleum products. In partnership with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, the NCS intercepted over 695,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit.
Additionally, he shared how the integration of geospatial technologies like satellite feeds and geo-mapping has enhanced the Service’s surveillance and enforcement capabilities, ensuring more effective and sustainable operations.
The conference culminated in a Gala and Award Night on December 12, 2024, where the NCS was honored with the prestigious ‘Best National Security Service in West, East, and Central Africa 2023/2024’ award.
CGC Adeniyi also received individual recognition for his exemplary leadership and contributions to the Service’s successes.
These accolades celebrate the NCS’s remarkable achievements in securing Nigeria’s borders, facilitating trade, and combating transnational crimes through cutting-edge enforcement strategies and technological advancements.
