Donald Trump has unveiled a bold proposal to grant automatic green cards to all graduates of U.S. colleges, aiming to stem the flow of talent leaving the country and prevent what he calls a “brain drain.”

Under this plan, graduates from a wide range of academic programs whether from two-year colleges, four-year universities, or doctoral programs would be eligible, regardless of the prestige of their institution or their specific field of study.

Trump highlighted the loss to the U.S. economy when these highly educated individuals, who often graduate from top-tier institutions like Harvard, MIT, or even lesser-known colleges, are forced to leave after completing their studies. “When we lose phenomenal individuals from schools like Harvard and MIT, or even those from smaller colleges that produce exceptional talent, it’s a blow to our economy,” he said.

As stated by Trump, the innovation and entrepreneurial drive these graduates bring are essential to maintaining the country’s global competitiveness.

One of the key issues the proposal seeks to address is the struggle faced by international students who wish to stay in the U.S. after graduation but are frequently hindered by restrictive visa limitations.

These students, unable to secure permanent residency, often return to their home countries, such as India or China, where they go on to create multi-billion-dollar companies. These companies not only employ thousands but also contribute to the growth of economies abroad jobs and wealth that could have otherwise been generated in the U.S.

Trump’s proposal emphasizes that when the brightest minds are forced to leave, the potential benefits to U.S. businesses and the broader economy are lost. “They leave with innovative ideas, plans to start companies, and a desire to contribute to our economy. But when we send them back to countries like India or China, those ideas are executed there, and the jobs they create are created there,” Trump explained.

The result is that the U.S. misses out on job creation, tax revenue, and the long-term economic growth that these entrepreneurs could have spurred had they stayed.

This proposal, in Trump’s view, is crucial to ensuring that the U.S. workforce remains competitive on a global scale. By making it easier for top graduates to stay in the country and contribute their skills, he argues, U.S. businesses can continue to grow and innovate. “Companies need brilliant people to innovate and grow. Forcing the brightest graduates to leave not only undermines their potential but also hurts our businesses and the economy,” Trump stated.

The plan reflects a broader concern about the global race for talent, with other countries also seeking to attract the best and brightest from around the world.

Trump’s proposal, if enacted, would seek to make the U.S. the top destination for global talent, ensuring that the most innovative and skilled individuals can stay in the country and help drive its future economic success.
