In December, Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syria’s new de facto leader, led an unexpected rebel offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad after over two decades in power, forcing the former president to seek refuge in Moscow.
Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo noted that the end of al-Assad’s “brutal and repressive rule, backed by Russia and Iran,’’ created a rare chance for Syria and its citizens to rebuild.
“During this period of transition, Treasury will continue to support humanitarian assistance and responsible governance in Syria,’’ he stated.
