Ondo State Governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted amnesty to 40 prison inmates serving various sentences in a gesture commemorating his 60th birthday.

The announcement was made public through a statement on Sunday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ebenezer Adeniyan.

The Governor’s decision was formally conveyed by Dr. Kayode Ajulo (SAN), the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

Adeniyan explained, “In a heartwarming show of compassion for his milestone 60th birthday, Governor Aiyedatiwa has extended mercy to 40 convicts.

This act embodies his commitment to rehabilitation and the belief in the power of second chances.”

The decision followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, highlighting the governor’s resolve to prioritize reform within the justice system.

Among the 40 beneficiaries, 15 will be fully released from prison starting January 12, 2025.

Additionally, some inmates previously sentenced to death will now serve life imprisonment, and others will see their prison terms reduced, providing them with the opportunity for reintegration into society.

The amnesty was executed in accordance with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

In related news former Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko Congratulates Aiyedatiwa on 60th Birthday.

In a statement on Sunday, Mimiko stressed the importance of prayer for Aiyedatiwa’s success and strength in office, saying, “I join your family, friends, and associates in wishing you a happy 60th birthday.

May the Lord continue to bless and guide you as you step into your Diamond Years, and grant you wisdom and success in all your endeavors.”

Mimiko also acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead for Aiyedatiwa, particularly after securing a full four-year term in office.

He prayed for divine guidance in Aiyedatiwa’s governance, saying, “The journey ahead will undoubtedly be eventful.

I pray that the Lord stands by you in all you do and grants you long life, excellent health, and peace of mind.”
