Hundreds of University of Ibadan students Wednesday protested the ongoing power outage at the University College Hospital, UCH, in Ibadan.
The nation’s premier teaching hospital also serves as the academic platform for medical students of the University of Ibadan.
Reports indicate that the hospital has been facing a power outage for over a year due to outstanding debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, which early November cut power from the facility.

IBEDC had disconnected the power supply to the hospital in March 2024 because of unpaid electricity bills.
Similarly, the hospital’s power was cut off in November 2023 for the same reason.
IBEDC has refused entreaties to reconnect the hospital which offered to defray its outstanding debt about N300m.
On Wednesday morning, students from the University of Ibadan held a peaceful demonstration to voice their concerns regarding the ongoing situation at the hospital.
Reports indicated that students were led by Bolaji Aweda, the President of the Students’ Union.
Aweda explained that the university’s students are directly impacted by the issue.
“We are protesting against what is happening. And of course, our students are affected.
“For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.
“IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power,” he said.
