As a fresh graduate of Human Anatomy, I thought I had the world at my feet. But little did I know, the job market in Abuja had other plans.

My name is Nneoma, and I graduated in August, 2022. After completing my NYSC in January 2023, I moved to Abuja with high hopes of landing a job in a big hospital. But the reality was far from my expectations.

During my time at the NYSC orientation camp, I was shocked to discover that there were no anatomists on the medical team. I volunteered to help, but my services were declined. This was my first taste of disappointment in the job market.

Despite the initial setback, I remained optimistic. I updated my CV, attended networking events, and applied to various job openings. But as the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, my frustration grew.

It wasn’t until I met a lady named Juliet in June, 2024, that my perspective changed. She advised me to network more, attend events, and aim high. I took her advice to heart and started applying to bigger organizations.

Three months later, on September 6, 2024, I received an unexpected job offer from a travel agency at Transcorp Hilton. I was hired as a ticketing and hotel reservations officer, a role that was far removed from my medical background.

At first, I was hesitant, but I soon realized that this new role was an opportunity for growth. I’ve learned to adapt to new challenges and appreciate the value of networking and being open-minded.

My job search journey in Abuja has been a rollercoaster of emotions, but I’ve come to realize that it’s okay to take things one step at a time. I’m still applying to different roles, and I remain positive that I’ll eventually find my dream job.

For now, I’m grateful for the experience and lessons learned along the way. And to Juliet, the lady who gave me advice that changed my perspective, I say thank you.
