The Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC, Adewale Adeniyi, has reached out to the National Sports Commission NSC, for assistance in hosting the African Volleyball Inter-Club Women’s Championship.
The event is aimed at boosting Nigeria’s sports landscape, engage youth in productive activities, and strengthen the country’s presence on the global sports stage.
During a visit to the Chairman of the NSC, Shehu Dikko, Adeniyi highlighted the Nigeria Customs Service’s, dedication to using sports as a tool for fostering national pride, unity, and providing youth development opportunities.
While praising the Commission’s leadership for its professionalism, Adeniyi expressed confidence that Nigeria’s sporting excellence will be revived. He also shared optimism that the championship, set for April 2025 in Abuja, will draw top teams from across the continent.
“For the first time in a long time, we have tested and accomplished professionals driving sports development in Nigeria. We have no doubt that the glory days of sports are back,” Adeniyi stated.
The Customs leader disclosed that the Nigerian Olympic Committee had granted the Service the rights to host the championship in collaboration with the Nigerian Volleyball Federation, from 1 to 14 April 2025, showcasing Africa’s finest volleyball teams.
He further assured the Commission of the Service’s commitment to ensuring the event is a success, vowing to deliver a remarkable tournament that reflects Nigeria’s growing influence in the sports world.
Dikko applauded CGC Adeniyi’s vision and called the initiative a significant step in enhancing Nigeria’s international image and promoting youth involvement in sports.
“This championship is not just an opportunity to showcase our athletes but also a platform to inspire young Nigerians and demonstrate our organisational capabilities to the world.
“Sports are a unifying force, and we will work to ensure that this event reflects the best of what Nigeria can offer,” Dikko remarked.
He offered the Commission’s full support, including access to facilities, technical expertise and logistical backing, to ensure the championship becomes a landmark event for the country’s future sporting efforts.
Similarly, the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Engr Habu Gumel, commended CGC Adeniyi for his innovative approach to integrating sports into the Customs Service’s culture and reaffirmed his commitment to the tournament’s success.
“We must be deliberate in our preparations and ensure that this championship becomes a springboard for hosting more international tournaments.
“The National Sports Commission is fully committed to providing all necessary support,” he added.
