Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni has been emerged the new chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum.
He will function in that capacity for two years, indicative of the deep trust and confidence his fellow governors place in his ability to steer the forum towards greater regional stability and development.
The Lake Chad Basin, which spans Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, faces pressing challenges, including insecurity, environmental degradation, and economic hardship.
Governor Buni’s appointment is expected to strengthen collaborative efforts among member states to address these issues and promote sustainable development, security, and resilience across the region.
At the the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, held in Maiduguri, Borno State, Governor Buni lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering leadership and dedication to fostering regional stability and cooperation. He also acknowledged the President’s crucial role in addressing the shared challenges faced by the region.
The Forum, which gathered governors from Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, along with representatives from the United Nations, African Union Commission, and development partners, focused on strategies to stabilize, recover, and rebuild the Lake Chad Basin.
Governor Buni emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving lasting solutions, highlighting progress made in infrastructure rehabilitation, livelihood restoration, and reintegration of displaced persons.
He also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support of the Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery, and Resilience ,RS-SRR, a coordinated initiative aimed at addressing the impact of insurgency and facilitating long-term development.
“As we embark on the deliberations of this forum, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to President Tinubu for his political leadership and continuous commitment to advancing peace and resilience in the Lake Chad Basin region,” Governor Buni stated
