A seven-storey commercial building in the Iddo area of Lagos Island went up in flames on Thursday, sending panic through the area.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reported that the fire started around 10 am in the archival room of the building, which houses commercial banks, a bottling company, and other businesses.
Firefighters from the Sari Iganmu and Ebute Elefun Fire Stations swiftly responded to the emergency and managed to confine the blaze to its origin. The fire, which broke out on the first floor of the AG Leventis-owned Iddo House, was successfully extinguished before it could spread further.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the Nigeria Bottling Company PLC, one of the occupants of the building, reported the incident at 10:22 am. The affected archival room, measuring about 108 square metres, suffered significant damage, but the quick intervention of fire officials prevented a more severe disaster.
Initial investigations suggest that the fire was caused by self-ignition due to rising room temperature in the confined archival space. While a full investigation is ongoing, authorities have confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service assured the public that the operation had been successfully completed, emphasizing the importance of fire safety measures in commercial buildings to prevent future occurrences.
