Tragedy struck in Osun State on Monday when armed men ambushed and killed the newly reinstated Chairman of Irewole Local Government, Remi Abass.
The attack occurred as Abass arrived at the local government secretariat with his supporters, leading to chaos and pandemonium.
Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services have arrested several suspects linked to the violence. The incident has fueled political tensions, with calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assassination.
Governor Ademola Adeleke had earlier raised concerns over an alleged plot by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, to destabilize the state.
He accused Oyetola of issuing illegal directives to security operatives to enforce the return of sacked local government chairmen.
At a press briefing on Sunday, Adeleke alleged that Oyetola was using his influence as President Bola Tinubu’s nephew to push through actions that could lead to unrest. He insisted that Tinubu, as a true democrat, would not support moves capable of causing bloodshed.
“The evil plot is being spearheaded by Mr. Gboyega Oyetola in active collaboration with security agencies. He is issuing illegal directives simply because he is the President’s nephew,” Adeleke had warned.
The governor clarified that the affected chairmen were removed based on two Federal High Court judgments before he assumed office. He urged Tinubu and the public to intervene, describing the situation as an abuse of power that could destabilize Osun State.
“We see this as a gross betrayal of trust reposed in the Osun State security officers by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he stated.
The assassination of Abass has sparked outrage across the state, with residents demanding justice and an end to politically motivated violence. Security agencies have intensified efforts to restore order as investigations continue.
