Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have rejected Mudashiru Obasa’s claim to remain Speaker.

Speaking to journalists at the assembly complex on Thursday, the lawmakers reaffirmed their support for the current speaker, Mojisola Meranda, insisting that she is the legitimate speaker.

Steven Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Security, and Strategy, emphasized that the lawmakers remain committed to upholding Obasa’s removal.

He also called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress ,APC, in Lagos to address the ongoing leadership crisis.

Ogundipe stated, “We were advised by our leaders to remain calm, but we are surprised by today’s events. We won’t take laws into our own hands, just as we told the staff. But we represent different constituencies, and we have our mandate. We urge the leadership to engage with us directly, not through this charade.”

He further expressed dissatisfaction, saying, “We are not happy. We’ve been law-abiding and respectful. We want to be treated with dignity as elected representatives. I appeal to our party leadership—we cannot continue like this.”

Meanwhile, Obasa was seen entering the Assembly complex around noon on Thursday, accompanied by lawmakers Ayinde Akinsanya (Mushin Constituency I) and Noheem Adams (Mushin Constituency II).

This came after the withdrawal of the security aides assigned to Speaker Meranda.

The Assembly has been in turmoil since Obasa’s removal and Meranda’s subsequent election as Speaker.

Obasa faced accusations from over 90 percent of lawmakers, including poor leadership, lateness to functions, high-handedness, and abuse of office.

To address the crisis, APC leaders, including former governors Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, held meetings with political stakeholders in the state last weekend, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.

Sources suggest that both Obasa and Meranda may step aside, with party leaders considering one of the seven lawmakers from Lagos West as a potential new Speaker.
