Bayern Munich delivered a dominant 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday, with Harry Kane netting twice to put the German giants in a commanding position.
Despite struggling to defeat Leverkusen in their last six meetings since Xabi Alonso took charge in October 2022, Bayern were in fine form at the Allianz Arena, outclassing the reigning Bundesliga champions. Leverkusen, on the other hand, appeared rattled from the outset.
The breakthrough came early, with Kane rising to meet a perfectly delivered cross from Michael Olise, heading Bayern into the lead just nine minutes into the game.

His replacement, Edmund Tapsoba, was soon involved in another key moment, as he fouled Kane in the penalty area. Referee Michael Oliver, after consulting VAR, awarded Bayern a penalty, which Kane confidently converted for his second of the night—continuing his remarkable streak of 30 consecutive successful penalties for club and country.
Leverkusen’s frustrations were evident as Alonso, who had emphasized the importance of remaining calm under pressure, watched on with his hands covering his face as Bayern celebrated their third goal.
The result was a significant blow to Leverkusen, who had eliminated Bayern from the German Cup earlier this season and held them to a goalless draw in their recent Bundesliga encounter.
Despite Leverkusen’s strong form in domestic competitions, they were no match for Bayern on the European stage.
With veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer forced off with injury, Bayern continued to press, with debutant Jonas Urbig untested in goal for the remaining 30 minutes.
Bayern’s clinical performance and Kane’s brace put them in pole position for a spot in the quarter-finals, reinforcing their aspirations of reaching this season’s Champions League final in Munich.
