Manchester United went ahead through Joshua Zirkzee but settled for a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad in their Europa League last-16 first-leg clash.
Tottenham Hotspur, however, suffered a 1-0 defeat at AZ Alkmaar.
United had early chances, with Bruno Fernandes’ goal-bound shot blocked and Zirkzee’s follow-up effort saved.
Alejandro Garnacho fired into the side netting before setting up Zirkzee in the second half, allowing the Dutch forward to smash a first-time shot past Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro.
The hosts responded as Brais Mendez curled an effort just wide before winning a penalty for a Fernandes handball. Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the spot to equalize with 20 minutes left. Sociedad pushed for a winner, forcing United’s Andre Onana into a fine save, but Erik ten Hag’s side held firm to remain the only unbeaten team in the competition.
Tottenham endured a frustrating night in the Netherlands, falling behind in the 18th minute when Lucas Bergvall turned a corner into his own net. The visitors failed to register a shot on target in the first half.
Bergvall nearly redeemed himself after the break with a long-range effort that went just wide, but Spurs failed to find an equalizer, leaving them with a tough task in the return leg.
