Former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and joined the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

El-Rufai’s resignation letter has been submitted to the APC leadership in his ward in Kaduna, and he has instructed his political supporters and allies to follow him in his new political direction.

In a statement released online on Monday El-Rufai explained that his decision was driven by a growing disconnect between his personal values and the current trajectory of the APC.

He accused the party’s leadership of abandoning the progressive ideals that originally defined the APC’s foundation.

“Recent developments over the last two years have shown that those in control of the APC have no intention of acknowledging, let alone addressing, the party’s deteriorating situation,” El-Rufai stated.

He added that he had repeatedly raised concerns about the party’s direction, both privately and publicly, but his warnings were ignored by the APC leadership.

El-Rufai, a key figure in the 2013 merger of opposition parties that led to the formation of the APC, lamented that the party had drifted away from its original vision.

He reflected on his contributions to the APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, as well as his tenure as Kaduna Governor, during which he implemented policies focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, job creation, and investment.

In joining the SDP, El-Rufai cited a commitment to finding a platform more aligned with his progressive values.
