The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, has demanded the immediate resignation of Governor Siminalayi Fubara within 48 hours, threatening impeachment if he fails to comply.
Okocha issued the ultimatum during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday, emphasizing that the Supreme Court judgment must be strictly upheld. He criticized the governor’s recent invitation to lawmakers led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, describing it as punitive and unnecessary.
He argued that Fubara had no authority to summon the Assembly members for discussions on the court ruling, especially since they were scheduled to sit on March 10. Instead, the governor was expected to present the state budget and discuss legislative matters such as remuneration and the Assembly’s sitting venue.
The APC chairman accused Fubara of disregarding the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu, stating that such actions amounted to disrespect for the party’s national leadership. He stressed that the opposition would not remain silent while the governor allegedly defied presidential directives.

Expressing his concerns over the unfolding political crisis, Okocha warned that Fubara was “sitting on a keg of gunpowder.” He maintained that the Supreme Court ruling provided sufficient grounds for the governor to step down, urging him to do so voluntarily before impeachment proceedings commenced.
Despite the ongoing tension, Okocha praised Speaker Amaewhule and the Assembly members for their resilience. He commended their commitment to upholding legislative independence and ensuring that constitutional processes were followed.
The political crisis in Rivers State has deepened in recent months, with tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government reaching a boiling point. The APC leadership in the state insists that Fubara’s actions threaten governance and must be addressed immediately.
As the 48-hour deadline approaches, all eyes remain on the governor to see whether he will bow to the pressure or brace for an impeachment battle in the days ahead.
