The Nigerian House of Representatives has instructed the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC,to direct internet service providers to block websites that host obscene and pornographic content.
This resolution was adopted on Tuesday following a motion introduced by Dalhatu Tafoki, a representative from Katsina State.
Tafoki argued that unrestricted access to pornographic materials undermines societal values, particularly among the youth.
Tafoki pointed out that numerous countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have passed laws banning pornography.
He further cited warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the detrimental effects of pornography, including its role in promoting adultery, prostitution, and addiction.

“Prominent psychologists and sociologists globally have raised alarms about the psychological and societal dangers posed by pornography,” Tafoki noted.
During the session, lawmakers voiced their support for the motion, with House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas conducting a voice vote.
Supporters emphasized the need to safeguard Nigerian cultural and moral values by restricting access to explicit content.
The legislators urged the NCC to enforce the directive promptly, insisting that penalties be levied against internet service providers who fail to comply with the order.
