Real Madrid and Aston Villa sealed their places in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday, with Madrid edging past Atletico in a tense penalty shootout and Villa thrashing Club Brugge to continue their fairytale run.

At the Metropolitano Stadium, Atletico struck early through Conor Gallagher, levelling the tie-on aggregate within 27 seconds. Diego Simeone’s men dominated, but Thibaut Courtois’ crucial saves kept Madrid alive. Vinicius Junior missed a penalty in regular time, and the match stretched into extra time.

The derby was ultimately decided in a dramatic shootout, where Julian Alvarez slipped while taking his spot-kick, leading to a costly double touch. Marcos Llorente also missed for Atletico, and Antonio Rudiger buried the winner to seal a 4-2 penalty triumph. Madrid, unbeaten by their city rivals in the competition, will now face Arsenal in the quarterfinals.

Over at Villa Park, Aston Villa delivered a commanding performance against 10-man Brugge, securing a 3-0 victory and a 6-1 aggregate win. Kyriani Sabbe’s early red card tilted the game in Villa’s favor, and second-half substitute Marco Asensio made the most of it, scoring twice.

Ian Maatsen also found the net as Unai Emery’s side booked a historic last-eight spot—their first in 42 years. Their quarterfinal clash against Paris Saint-Germain sets up an emotional reunion for both Asensio and Emery, who previously spent time at the French club.

With the Champions League quarterfinals set, both Madrid and Villa continue their quest for European glory in what promises to be an electrifying next round.
