The Nigerian Senate has responded to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s complaint at the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Conference in New York, dismissing claims that her suspension was linked to allegations of sexual harassment or assault.
The Kogi lawmaker had sought the intervention of the global body, calling her suspension an injustice. After listening to her concerns, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, IPU, assured her that it would review the matter after considering all perspectives.
In a letter delivered by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate insisted that Natasha’s six-month suspension was due to gross misconduct and disregard for the chamber’s standing orders. The letter was read at the event by Honourable Kafilat Ogbara, Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development.
The Senate described reports linking the suspension to harassment allegations as misleading, emphasizing that disciplinary measures were strictly based on Natasha’s alleged unruly behavior. It reaffirmed its authority to enforce order among lawmakers.
Despite this position, Honourable Ogbara urged a thorough investigation into Natasha’s allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. She maintained that all procedural steps were followed before the suspension was enforced.
With the IPU stepping in to examine the issue, the controversy surrounding Natasha’s suspension continues to spark debate both locally and internationally.
