Airtel Africa has launched an Artificial Intelligence, AI powered Spam Alert Service in Nigeria, marking a major step in the fight against spam messages and online fraud.
Speaking at the launch in Lagos on Thursday, Airtel Nigeria’s Managing Director, Dinesh Balsingh, described the innovation as a game changer for the telecom industry in Africa. He emphasized that the service, which is available at no extra cost to Airtel subscribers, would enhance customer safety by detecting and alerting users of suspected spam SMS in real-time.
“As a customer-centric organization, we are proud to pioneer Africa’s first AI-powered spam alert solution,” Balsingh said. “This innovation will revolutionize the telecoms industry in Africa, and we are excited to launch it in Nigeria, our largest market.”
Balsingh explained that the system operates with a dual-layer protection mechanism, analyzing over 250 parameters, including sender usage patterns, SMS frequency, and the geographical spread of targets. It processes over 1.5 billion messages within two milliseconds, ensuring real-time filtering of spam messages.
Additionally, the service features a centralized database of blacklisted URLs, scanning every SMS in real-time to warn users against clicking on malicious links.
