Nigeria’s Super Falcons produced their best performance of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON, thrashing Egypt 6-2 to secure a place in the quarterfinals and keep their dream of a record-extending 11th continental title alive.

The defending champions entered the decisive Group C encounter at the Rabat Olympic Stadium under pressure after a surprise 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening match and a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia. Knowing only a win would guarantee progression, Nigeria responded in emphatic fashion with an attacking masterclass.

Captain Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a VAR review confirmed a handball inside the Egyptian penalty area. The Super Falcons continued to dominate proceedings, with six different players getting on the scoresheet in a convincing display that underlined why Nigeria remain Africa’s most successful women’s national team.

Although Egypt found the net twice, they struggled to contain Nigeria’s relentless attacking pressure as the Super Falcons controlled possession, created numerous chances and punished defensive errors throughout the contest.

The emphatic victory ensured Nigeria finished second in Group C behind Malawi, who also progressed to the knockout stage. Egypt and Zambia were eliminated after failing to accumulate enough points to advance.

The result also set up a highly anticipated quarter-final clash against Cameroon, renewing one of the fiercest rivalries in African women’s football. Both nations have a rich history at the continental championship, with Nigeria traditionally holding the upper hand in previous meetings.

Head coach Justine Madugu praised his players’ response after the disappointing start to the tournament, saying the team showed resilience, character and the winning mentality expected of defending champions. He noted that the victory over Egypt demonstrated the squad’s determination to retain the title despite early setbacks.

Nigeria remains the most decorated side in WAFCON history, having won the competition 10 times. The Super Falcons reclaimed the trophy in the previous edition after a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the final, and they are now chasing an unprecedented 11th African crown.

With confidence restored following the dominant win over Egypt, the Super Falcons will now shift their attention to the knockout stage, where they hope to continue their resurgence and move one step closer to another historic continental triumph.
