Newcastle United ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought in style, defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
Local hero Dan Burn powered in a header just before halftime, while Alexander Isak sealed the win with his 23rd goal of the season early in the second half. Federico Chiesa’s late strike for Liverpool wasn’t enough to deny the Magpies their long-awaited silverware.
Eddie Howe’s men, cheered on by a passionate crowd of 88,513, outplayed 10-time champions Liverpool, making Howe the first English manager to lift a domestic trophy since Harry Redknapp in 2008.
Midfield maestro Bruno Guimarães described the moment as one of the best days of his life.
“For these fans, this is like the World Cup. People have not seen Newcastle as champions—we are here to make history,” he said.

The Magpies started strong, with Sandro Tonali and Isak threatening early on. Burn’s breakthrough came in stoppage time, rising unmarked to head in Kieran Trippier’s corner. Isak then doubled the lead in the 52nd minute, finishing off a sharp move after Liverpool failed to clear their lines.
Liverpool, struggling to find their rhythm, saw Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez introduced in search of a comeback. Jones nearly made an impact, but Nick Pope’s stunning reflex save kept Newcastle in control.
Though Chiesa pulled one back in added time, Newcastle stood firm, securing their first domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup and their first silverware since the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
With a landmark victory over Liverpool—ending a winless run of 17 games against the Reds—Newcastle’s triumph marks the beginning of a new era at St. James’ Park.
