The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the management of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, demanding urgent action on four key issues related to workers’ welfare and the alleged victimisation of labour leaders.

At a press briefing in Lagos on Monday, NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi warned that failure to address these concerns would lead to a nationwide shutdown of all WAEC offices starting, March 24.

“If the management does not take immediate action, all WAEC offices across the country will be shut down indefinitely,” Adeyemi declared.

The union insists that its grievances must be urgently addressed to protect the rights and well-being of its members.

This is not the first time NASU has taken such a stance. In 2019, the union also threatened a shutdown, stating that its members working in WAEC’s Nigerian offices would withdraw their services from October 14.

At that time, NASU had pushed for a review of the scheme of service, the creation of more positions for its members, and the implementation of the policy on ex-gratia payments. However, WAEC management failed to respond to multiple letters from the union.

With the latest ultimatum, NASU is once again demanding swift action, warning that a failure to meet its demands could disrupt WAEC’s operations across the country.
