The Rivers State Police Command has arrested two suspects linked to the explosion that rocked the Trans-Niger Pipeline in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area.
The blast, which occurred at midnight on Monday, severely damaged a section of the pipeline operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC. The pipeline transports crude oil to the Bonny Terminal, one of Nigeria’s key crude export facilities.
Police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the arrests in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, stating that security operatives on routine patrol detected the explosion and immediately alerted SPDC officials. The company quickly shut down the affected pipeline to prevent further damage and environmental hazards.
She assured residents that the situation was under control, emphasizing that there was no immediate threat to public safety. However, she noted that investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the explosion and the extent of the damage.
Two individuals are currently being interrogated to establish whether the incident was an act of sabotage. Iringe-Koko stated that the command was committed to bringing those responsible to justice and warned against any criminal activities that could endanger lives and property.

The police urged residents of the area to remain calm and report any suspicious activities. Iringe-Koko stressed that security agencies would continue monitoring the situation to prevent further incidents.
The explosion comes at a time of political uncertainty in Rivers State, with tensions rising over the impeachment plot against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. The development also follows recent threats by militant groups to attack oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta.
Authorities are working closely with SPDC to assess the level of damage and restore normal operations. Environmental experts are also expected to inspect the site to determine if there are any ecological risks.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and protecting vital oil installations from criminal activities. Efforts are being made to strengthen security around major pipelines and other critical infrastructure in the region.
Meanwhile, stakeholders have called for urgent dialogue to address rising tensions and prevent further attacks on the country’s oil sector.
