Two members of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in the House of Representatives have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress , APC, citing internal party crises as their primary reason for leaving.
Husseini Jallo, representing Igabi Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, and Adamu Tanko, representing Suleja/Tara/Gurara Federal Constituency in Niger State, announced their defections on Tuesday.
Their departure adds to the growing number of lawmakers who have switched allegiance in recent months.
Jallo, in a letter read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during plenary, explained that the prolonged instability within the PDP had hampered his ability to serve his constituents effectively.
He further expressed his belief in APC’s leadership and its platform, particularly highlighting his trust in Speaker Abbas’ leadership and his commitment to national unity.
Jallo’s defection marks the second exit from the PDP by a lawmaker from Kaduna, following the recent departure of Amos Magaji.

Similarly, Tanko cited extensive consultations with political stakeholders in his constituency as the reason behind his decision to join the APC.
In response to the defections, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda raised a point of order, arguing that the seats of the defecting lawmakers should be declared vacant, referencing a Supreme Court ruling that mandates members to fully complete their defection process.
Chinda expressed concerns that there was no evidence to show that Jallo and Tanko had adhered to the legal requirements for defection.
Deputy Minority Leader Ali Isa also weighed in, urging the defectors to retract their defection letters or face legal action.
He reaffirmed the PDP’s strength as both a political party and as an opposition force, insisting there was no crisis within the party.
Isa further demanded that the defecting members resign their positions and seek re-election, saying it was only honorable for them to face the voters once again in a fresh election.
