All charges against Naomi Silekunola, former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, founder of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, have been withdrawn by the Oyo State Government.
They were initially arraigned following the December 2024 funfair stampede that claimed at least 35 children’s lives.
Addressing journalists, Oyo State Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, explained that while the tragic incident warranted legal action, the government considered the remorse and efforts of the accused to comfort the victims’ families.

“It was an unfortunate incident that led to the death of many,” Aikomo said. “Whenever death occurs under unnatural circumstances, the law takes its course. So, the state responded by filing charges against those implicated.”
However, he noted that the defendants demonstrated empathy and made efforts to assuage the affected families. Given the circumstances, he stated, “The essence of prosecution is not to kill or persecute. It is in the interest of justice to discontinue these charges.”
Following a court session on Thursday, the charges were officially struck out, setting the defendants free.
Outside the courtroom, the three were seen in good spirits, exchanging pleasantries as they left the legal ordeal behind.
