Gunmen have attacked Ruwi village in Butura District, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing 11 people and leaving several others injured.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, has drawn widespread condemnation from authorities and local organizations.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the attack in a statement issued on Friday in Jos. Spokesman for the command, Mr. Alfred Alabo, stated that the gunmen stormed the village at about 9:20 p.m., opening fire on residents who had gathered for a wake-keep.

Mr. Emmanuel Adesina, the Commissioner of Police in the state, visited the scene of the attack to assess the situation. He described the assault as senseless and directed immediate deployment of officers to restore calm and track down the perpetrators. He further expressed condolences to the affected families and assured them of the command’s commitment to justice.

The Bokkos Cultural Development Council also confirmed the casualties, lamenting the continued attacks on communities in the area. Leaders of the council called for urgent intervention from security agencies to prevent further bloodshed.

Meanwhile, the Plateau State Government has condemned the attack, urging security forces to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. The Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Joyce Ramnap, appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and not resort to reprisals. She reaffirmed the government’s dedication to protecting lives and property.

Security operatives have since intensified patrols in the affected area as investigations continue. The latest attack adds to the growing concerns over security in the region, with community leaders calling for stronger measures to curb the rising violence.
