The United Kingdom has increased visa application fees for students, tourists, and other travellers, a move expected to impact Nigerians and other international applicants.
The UK Home Office announced that the cost of a student visa has risen from £363 to £490, reflecting a 35% increase. Other visa categories, including work and family visas, have also been adjusted.
The government defended the decision, stating that the additional revenue would sustain the immigration system and fund public sector wages.
“It is right and fair to increase visa application fees to ensure that the costs of running the immigration system are met by those who benefit from it,” the Home Office stated.
However, the new rates have sparked concerns among students and travel consultants, particularly in Nigeria, where the UK remains a top destination for education and tourism.
Many worry that the increase could make studying in the UK even more challenging for aspiring students.
Adeola Ogunsanya, a Nigerian travel consultant, described the hike as a major obstacle for students already struggling with tuition and living expenses. She warned that the additional financial burden could discourage many from pursuing their dreams abroad.

“Many Nigerian students already struggle with tuition and living expenses in the UK. Adding an extra financial burden through higher visa fees will make it even harder for them,” she said.
Tunde Ajayi, a prospective master’s student, shared similar concerns. He had been saving up for his studies but now fears that the increased visa fee may force him to reconsider his plans.
“I have been saving up for my studies in the UK, but with this extra cost, I might have to reconsider my plans,” he said.
With thousands of Nigerians applying for UK visas each year, experts predict that the fee hike could lead to a decline in applications, particularly among students facing financial constraints.
Many fear that the cost increase could push students toward alternative study destinations with more affordable immigration policies.
Despite the backlash, the UK government insists that the adjustments are necessary to ensure a sustainable and efficient immigration system. Officials maintain that the changes will help fund essential services and maintain the smooth operation of visa processing.
