Solution FC of Anambra delivered a major upset on Wednesday by defeating Lobi Stars of Makurdi 2-1 in the ongoing Nigeria Federation Cup, bringing an end to the Makurdi-based club’s journey in the competition.
The thrilling encounter took place at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba, Abia State, where the Nigeria National League (NNL) side overcame their more experienced opponents from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Despite Lobi Stars being the favorites on paper, Solution FC showcased determination and resilience to secure a remarkable victory.
The first half of the match ended in a goalless stalemate, with both teams displaying a strong defensive setup. Lobi Stars had a few chances but failed to break through, while Solution FC held their ground, showing glimpses of their attacking potential.
After the break, Solution FC came out with renewed energy and broke the deadlock in the 51st minute. Emeka Oyuke capitalized on a defensive lapse by Lobi Stars to slot home the opening goal, sending Solution FC’s supporters into celebration.
Lobi Stars, determined to stay in the competition, pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Their efforts paid off in the 78th minute when substitute Alexander Oche, who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes, found the back of the net. His well-placed strike brought the game back to level terms, offering Lobi Stars a lifeline.

However, Solution FC was not ready to settle for a draw. With just five minutes left in regulation time, Ahamefuna Chizoba struck a decisive goal in the 85th minute, restoring Solution FC’s lead. The NNL team held on firmly for the remainder of the match, securing their place in the next round and sending Lobi Stars packing from the tournament.
Speaking after the match, Solution FC head coach Gabriel Ezema praised his team for their resilience and growing confidence. He credited his experience from his seven-year stint with Rangers FC of Enugu as a crucial factor in guiding his side to victory against an NPFL opponent.
“We have a good team, and I just needed to transfer my experience and instill confidence in the players so that they can compete at a higher level,” Ezema said.
He described the victory as a significant achievement, emphasizing that defeating an established NPFL team like Lobi Stars would serve as a huge morale booster for Solution FC heading into the second round of the NNL season.
Ezema also reflected on Lobi Stars’ performance, acknowledging their quality but stating that their display on the day did not reflect their position in the NPFL.
“I think Lobi Stars’ performance today did not match their standing in the Nigeria Premier League. They have a lot of experience and quality, but sometimes things don’t work out in football. They had their moments but failed to convert their chances, while we took ours and made them count,” he explained.
The victory marks a significant milestone for Solution FC, reinforcing their ambition to compete at the highest level. As they progress further in the competition, they will look to build on this success and continue their impressive run.
