A road crash on Cele Expressway, inward Oshodi, Lagos, has claimed the life of one pedestrian and left two others injured following multiple-vehicle collision on Saturday.

The incident, which caused serious traffic disruption, involved a 40-foot container-laden truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA,  Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the development in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria

He said the accident occurred when the articulated truck, transporting two large containers, suffered brake failure and lost control while speeding.

Bakare-Oki said the truck veered into traffic, causing the containers to dislodge and crush several vehicles. Five commercial buses, a Toyota Camry, and a Sienna bus were among those damaged in the crash. The chaos led to the death of an unsuspecting pedestrian and varying degrees of injuries to others.

“One of the bus drivers sustained multiple compound fractures in his arm and leg,” he said, adding that the injured were immediately evacuated by LASAMBUS to the General Hospital in Isolo for urgent medical care.

He noted that LASTMA officials, working in coordination with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and concerned citizens, carried out a swift rescue operation. Their prompt intervention helped clear the road and ease the heavy traffic build-up caused by the accident.

In addition, officers from the Ijesha-Tedo Police Division were deployed to maintain order and provide support during the emergency operation.

While expressing sympathy to the bereaved family, Bakare-Oki urged drivers to obey speed limits and traffic rules especially on the expressway to prevent similar tragedies.

He also reassured the public that a full investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences. He encouraged Lagosians to report emergencies or road violations via LASTMA’s toll-free line: 080000527862.
