Thomas Muller will depart Bayern Munich at the end of the 2024/25 season when his contract expires, bringing an end to a 25-year association with the Bundesliga club.

The 35-year-old joined Bayern’s youth ranks in 2000 and made his senior debut in 2008.

Since then, Muller has made 743 appearances and scored 247 goals for Bayern. Over the course of his 17-year senior career at the club, he won 33 honours, including 12 Bundesliga titles—the most by any single player in the German top-flight—and two UEFA Champions League trophies.

Muller’s current contract was set to expire in the summer after he signed a one-year extension in December 2023. Since renewing his deal, he has mostly featured in a limited role for the team.

Despite his reduced playing time, Muller stated in a letter to fans on social media that he “still really enjoy[s] being on the pitch” and could have “easily imagined taking on this role next year as well.”

He added that “the club consciously decided not to negotiate a new contract with me for next season,” and while the decision did not align with his personal wishes, he respects the club’s position and its process.

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said in a club statement that both parties had “found a mutual solution.” He described Muller as “one of the greatest player personalities this club has produced” and said it was important to reach a fair and amicable agreement.

Dreesen also said the club aims to “work together to ensure that this incredible career is crowned with hopefully three more trophies.” He added that Muller is among the players fans remember decades after retirement.

In his farewell message, Muller thanked supporters for their contribution to what he described as an “incredible journey.” He urged them to continue supporting the team as they aim to win the Bundesliga title this season.

Bayern Munich currently leads the Bundesliga by nine points ahead of defending champions Bayer Leverkusen. Under head coach Vincent Kompany, the club is moving closer to securing a 34th domestic league title.
