Team Bayelsa has emerged as the overall champion of the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival, NDSF, which concluded on April 8 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

Over six days of intense competition, Bayelsa secured a total of 86 medals, including 42 gold, 29 silver, and 15 bronze, claiming the top spot in the region’s most significant sports event.

Delta State finished in second place, with an impressive 99 medals — the highest medal count of the competition.

Their haul included 41 gold, 26 silver, and 32 bronze. Edo State followed closely in third place, with a total of 89 medals, consisting of 23 gold, 35 silver, and 31 bronze.

Rivers State, with 63 medals, finished fourth, having earned 21 gold, 16 silver, and 26 bronze. Host state Akwa Ibom came in sixth place, winning 37 medals: 9 gold, 14 silver, and 14 bronze.

Ondo State earned 43 medals, securing 10 gold, 18 silver, and 15 bronze, while Abia State rounded off the top spots with 32 medals, including 9 gold, 10 silver, and 13 bronze. Imo State accumulated 42 medals, consisting of 6 gold, 12 silver, and 24 bronze.

Cross River, which brought up the rear, earned 31 medals, including 5 gold, 7 silver, and 19 bronze.

The medals ceremony took place on Monday evening, ensuring a smooth and seamless closing for the competition on Tuesday.

The event, which started on April 1, showcased a thrilling range of sporting activities and served as a platform for athletes from the Niger Delta region to display their talents, strengthen regional unity, and promote sports development in the area.
