Veteran Nigerian rapper and activist, Eedris Abdulkareem, has openly criticized the Federal Government following the recent ban of his latest politically themed single, Tell Your Papa, by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC.
In a memo dated April 9, 2025, the NBC classified the song as “Not To Be Broadcast”, citing Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which restricts content considered offensive.
The directive, signed by Susan Obi, Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, was distributed to radio and TV stations across the country, effectively removing the song from mainstream airwaves.
Abdulkareem reacted strongly to the decision, describing it as yet another attempt by the Tinubu-led government to stifle free speech and critical voices
“In Nigeria, speaking the truth or offering genuine criticism is treated like a crime,” he stated.
He went further to describe the current administration under President Bola Tinubu as one of the most vindictive and insensitive governments in Nigeria’s history.
Tell Your Papa sheds light on the worsening economic conditions, increasing poverty, and unchecked government spending that Abdulkareem claims have plagued the country since President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

“Less than two years into this government, and the decline in every sector is alarming,” he said. “Every Nigerian can feel it, regardless of tribe, religion, or political leaning—except those who continue to beg for crumbs from the people in power.”
Abdulkareem, renowned for using his music to challenge authority, is no stranger to censorship.
His 2004 hit song *Jaga Jaga* was banned by the Obasanjo administration for its scathing portrayal of Nigeria’s leadership. Despite the ban, the song became a powerful anthem of political awareness among young Nigerians.
Reflecting on the country’s stagnation, Abdulkareem said, “Is it any surprise that Nigeria keeps falling short of real progress? The conscience is an open wound, and only the truth can bring healing.”
