The Nigerian Red Cross Society, NRCS, has distributed dignity kits to 110 women of reproductive age and girls with disabilities in Nasarawa State.

The engagement and distribution were carried out with support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent,IFRC.

Mrs Fatima Ibrahim-Nasir, Director of Protection, Gender, Inclusion and Education at NRCS Abuja, said on Thursday that the initiative was aimed at identifying with and supporting Persons with Disabilities, PWD.

“We want them to know that we are aware of their challenges and want them to be part of everything we do, for their voices to be heard,” she said.

“This programme is dedicated to PWDs, to interact with them and understand their perspectives on gender-related needs.

This will help us to plan better interventions for them.”

She explained that the dignity kits distributed contained essential items tailored for women within the reproductive age bracket and young girls.

The items included soap, reusable sanitary pads, detergents, disinfectants, body creams, and flip-flops, among others.

Mrs Lilian Adeogba, Senior Community Engagement Accountability Officer at IFRC, who supports Protection, Gender, and Inclusion efforts, stated that the programme was part of the IFRC’s Capacity Building Fund operation. The initiative is designed to promote inclusiveness and ensure that no one is left behind.

Adeogba highlighted that the objective was to prioritise the needs of persons with disabilities and ensure their voices are included in the operations of the IFRC through the NRCS.

“This means we need to know what their needs are, how to meet them, and how we can best partner and work together,” she said.

She noted that the drive to partner with PWDs has led to engagements with various stakeholders, including the Nasarawa State Persons with Disabilities Rights Commission.

“We are taking this forward to work closely with the NRCS to ensure that our tools and outreach methods are tailored specifically to the preferences and needs of PWDs.

“As an organisation, we are committed to continuously providing the best services in terms of access to information and the protection of their rights,” Adeogba added.

In his remarks, Mr Jerry Kuje, Secretary of NRCS in Nasarawa State, noted that the beneficiaries were selected from various communities without bias to ethnicity or religion. He said this aligns with the organisation’s commitment to inclusivity, community engagement, and accountability.

Also speaking, Mr Saleh Keana, Chairman of the Nasarawa State Disabilities Rights Commission, represented by Mr Tafida Jibrin, Commissioner I at the commission, expressed appreciation to NRCS for the recognition and kind gesture.

He noted that PWDs have long advocated for inclusion and commended the NRCS for responding to their call. Keana appealed to individuals and organisations to continue supporting vulnerable persons and PWDs to ease their challenges.

Some of the beneficiaries, including Aisha Abubakar, a physically challenged woman, and Elizabeth Allu, who is visually impaired, expressed gratitude to the NRCS for the support they received.
