Grace Ike, Chairperson of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, FCT Council, has stated that press freedom is not a privilege but a fundamental pillar of democracy.

She made this assertion at a news conference in Abuja while speaking on the upcoming 72-hour interview marathon organised by the NUJ FCT Council as part of activities marking the 2025 World Press Freedom Day.

According to Ike, press freedom must be non-negotiable in any society that aspires to uphold justice, accountability, and equality. She emphasised that defending this freedom is a shared responsibility among journalists, policymakers, and citizens across the globe.

Describing the planned 72-hour interview marathon as a bold and symbolic initiative, Ike said it would be anchored by Abuja-based journalist Livinus Victor and reflects the enduring role of journalism in informing the public, educating society, and driving national progress.

“Today, journalists face numerous challenges ranging from censorship and harassment to intimidation and threats to their lives,” she said. “These obstacles not only hinder the media’s ability to report the truth but also weaken the democratic systems that ensure government accountability.”

She noted that the marathon aims to spotlight these challenges while advocating for stronger protections for journalists everywhere. The event will feature conversations with thought leaders, policymakers, and members of the public, addressing themes such as governance, human rights, climate change, and education—issues that resonate both locally and globally.

Ike expressed confidence that the marathon could serve as a turning point for the media and for society at large. She called on all Nigerians, especially journalists in the FCT, to actively support the event.

“As the first female Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, I am particularly inspired by the vision behind this initiative,” Ike said. “It offers an opportunity to break barriers, reshape public narratives, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations of journalists.”

She urged journalists and residents of the FCT to participate—whether as interviewers, guests, or audience members—stressing that their involvement would contribute to a freer, more informed, and equitable society.

Ike also pledged that under her leadership, the NUJ FCT Council would continue to prioritise capacity building for journalists, equipping them with the skills and tools needed in today’s fast-evolving media landscape.

Speaking on the forthcoming event, Livinus Victor, anchor of the marathon interview, explained that beyond breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest interview, the initiative is intended to raise awareness about press freedom and the crucial role journalism plays in sustaining democracy.

“Despite the growing threats to press freedom—censorship, harassment, and violence—journalists continue to carry out their mission with courage and dedication,” Victor said.

He highlighted that in an era defined by misinformation and public distrust in institutions, professional journalism remains a vital safeguard against manipulation and falsehoods. The interview marathon, he added, will help promote impactful journalism that empowers the public and holds leaders accountable.

“In an age where truth is often under siege, this initiative reinforces the importance of a free, ethical, and courageous press,” Victor said. “Democracy cannot thrive without an informed public, and journalists make that possible.”

The interview, themed “Nigeria, Our Strength,” is scheduled to take place from April 17 to April 20, 2025, at Harrow Park Golf Club, located off Ahmadu Bello Way, behind Abia House in Abuja’s Central Business District.

Victor added that the event will feature interactive activities designed to engage the public, celebrate press freedom, and honour the sacrifices made by journalists around the world.
