Segun Odegbami, a former player of Nigeria’s Green Eagles, has mourned the passing of his teammate and close friend, Christian Chukwu.

In a moving tribute titled My Chairman Has Passed On, Odegbami described Chukwu as not just a former teammate, but a brother and one of Nigeria’s finest footballers. The late football icon, who was fondly called “Mr Chairman,” captained the Green Eagles from 1974 to 1980 and led the team to numerous historic feats.

“He was my teammate, my captain, my brother,” Odegbami wrote. “Christian was one of the finest footballers Nigeria has ever produced.”

Born on January 4, 1951, Chukwu was a commanding presence in Nigerian football for decades. As a tough and intelligent defender, he was widely respected for his leadership, tactical discipline, and impact on and off the pitch.

His most iconic achievement came in 1980, when he captained Nigeria to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations,AFCON, victory with a 3–0 win against Algeria.

Chukwu also played a key role in Nigeria’s performances in the 1976 and 1978 Nations Cup tournaments, where the team secured back-to-back third-place finishes. His influence helped shape the growth and success of the national team during a golden era.

After his retirement from active football, Chukwu seamlessly transitioned into coaching. He was appointed head coach of Kenya’s national team in 1998 and later took charge of the Super Eagles from 2003 to 2005. During his tenure, he guided the Nigerian team to the semi-finals of the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia, once again proving his strategic brilliance.

Odegbami said the news of Chukwu’s death reached him through their mutual friend and former teammate, Emmanuel Okala, whom he referred to as ‘Babuje’. Sharing his grief, he remarked, “I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, has passed on.”

He continued, “He was a true icon — former captain, coach, and one of Nigeria’s greatest footballing sons. It’s a huge loss to the football community. May ‘Onyim’ find peace with our Creator in heaven.”

Chukwu’s legacy as both a player and coach remains deeply rooted in the hearts of Nigerian football fans. His leadership, dedication, and service to the sport inspired generations and uplifted Nigerian football on the continental stage.

Odegbami concluded his message by extending condolences to Chukwu’s family and all those impacted by his life and legacy. “May God console his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his greatness.”

Chukwu’s passing marks the end of an era and the departure of a true national sporting treasure whose name will forever be etched in the history of Nigerian football.
