The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has expanded its contactless passport application system to the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil.
This was made known in a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Akinsola Akinlabi, through the official NIS ‘X’ page on Monday.
The contactless system eliminates the need for physical presence at passport offices for biometric enrolment, enabling Nigerians to apply and renew their passports remotely.
The rollout began in the U.S. on April 11, while Jamaica launched its version of the service on April 14. Both Mexico and Brazil are scheduled to go live on the same date.
This expansion marks the second phase of the NIS contactless passport initiative. The first phase launched in Canada on Nov 2024, and was extended to Europe, the United Kingdom, and Ireland in February 2025.

Currently, Nigerians in participating countries can access the service through the NIS Mobile App, which is available for download on the Google Play Store. The mobile application allows applicants to complete the entire passport renewal process without having to appear at any physical passport centre.
Plans are underway to launch the iOS version of the app on Apple’s App Store, alongside an enhanced update for both Android and iOS platforms to improve user experience and expand functionality.
With this latest phase, the contactless passport application system is now functional in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil, countries across Europe, the UK, Ireland, and select regions in Asia.
The NIS disclosed that implementation in Nigeria and Australia is still pending, with rollout dates to be announced at a later time.
Akinlabi reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to delivering user-friendly, efficient, and innovative passport services to Nigerians globally. He emphasised that this development is a key component of the Service’s broader digital transformation strategy, aimed at enhancing convenience and increasing access for Nigerians abroad.
