The Federal Government has disbursed ₦50 billion to fulfill earned allowances owed to academic and non-academic staff of federal universities nationwide.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the development in a statement issued by the Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, in Abuja on Wednesday.
Dr. Alausa said the sum was disbursed to settle earned allowances for both academic and non-academic staff unions of federal universities, in fulfilment of a promise made by President Bola Tinubu.
He described the intervention as a major milestone in the administration’s ongoing effort to reposition the education sector for improved performance and global relevance.
“The release of ₦50 billion for earned allowances reflects the president’s commitment to transitioning Nigeria from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy through strategic investments in education, infrastructure, and human capital,” the minister stated.
Dr. Alausa emphasised that the fund is not merely a financial transaction, but a demonstration of belief in the capacity of Nigerian youth and the pivotal role played by university staff in shaping future leaders.

He explained that the decision to prioritise the welfare of lecturers and support staff forms part of broader efforts to build a robust and competitive educational system that can serve as a foundation for national growth.
The minister commended both academic and non-academic staff unions for their continued cooperation and trust in the administration, noting that such collaboration has contributed significantly to industrial peace in federal universities.
He pointed out that the country is currently experiencing one of its longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent history, a development he attributed to the shared commitment between the government and university communities.
Dr. Alausa pledged that the Federal Ministry of Education will sustain its engagement with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the consistent delivery of quality education to Nigerian students.
He reaffirmed the government’s determination to uphold standards and drive reforms that will elevate the Nigerian education sector to international benchmarks.
