Air Peace has suspended all flight operations nationwide as a result of the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet,.

The airline made the decision on Wednesday, citing safety concerns stemming from the unavailability of critical weather updates provided by NiMet.

In a statement signed by Dr. Henry Ndiulo, Corporate Communications Manager at Air Peace, the airline emphasized that the Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather  reports are vital for flight safety, especially during the current season of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

“The absence of real-time weather forecasts from NiMet makes it unsafe to proceed with flight operations,” the statement read. “Our commitment to passenger and crew safety remains paramount.”

NiMet workers began an indefinite strike on April 23, grounding their operations nationwide. The agency plays a crucial role in aviation by providing real-time weather information used by pilots and air traffic controllers to ensure safe landings and takeoffs.

As a result of the strike, communication from control towers to pilots has been significantly affected, raising concerns about the safety of flights across Nigeria’s airspace.

The development has caused widespread disruption at major airports, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano, with passengers facing delays and cancellations.

Air Peace stated that customers with existing bookings will be contacted directly with updates and given the option to reschedule at no extra cost.

The airline apologized for the inconvenience and urged travelers to stay informed through official channels while the strike persists.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, is reportedly meeting with stakeholders to address the strike and explore possible resolutions.

Aviation experts have expressed concern over the implications of the NiMet strike, highlighting the need for urgent government intervention to restore essential services and avoid further disruption to the aviation sector.

As negotiations continue, travelers are advised to monitor updates and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
