An increasing number of Nigerian shoppers are expressing mixed feelings about Temu, the Chinese e-commerce platform that launched locally in late 2024.

A survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos highlights both satisfaction and dissatisfaction among users, based on interviews and social media reviews gathered from platforms like TikTok and Nairaland Forum.

Temu, which launched operations in Nigeria in November 2024, introduced itself with aggressive marketing campaigns and enticing offers, including free shipping and remarkably low prices.

By leveraging a direct-from-factory model, it bypasses traditional retail layers to provide products at wholesale rates.

While some customers expressed satisfaction with their purchases, noting prompt deliveries and effective refund processes, others expressed concerns over the quality of goods and misleading promotional offers.

A TikTok user, Imani, shared a positive experience, stating that most items she ordered met her expectations, and she received timely refunds for those that didn’t.

Similarly, a Nairaland user, Oluwatomiwa, praised the service but advised others to verify product details carefully to avoid receiving undersized or unexpected items.

However, not all reviews were favourable. Some customers described the promotional offers as deceptive, alleging that the so-called free gifts were subject to expensive purchasing conditions.

Others criticized product quality, citing instances where items delivered did not match their descriptions.

One user shared a story of purchasing a microwave, only to receive a miniature toy version. Another lamented buying a N130,000 fan that turned out to be substandard and incompatible with the advertised features.

In response, Temu said it is committed to ensuring transparency and improving customer experience. It stated that all promotional campaigns carry clear terms and that product quality is upheld through strict seller monitoring and external testing partnerships.

Temu added that it is still learning to adapt its services to local consumer preferences and remains focused on building a trusted shopping environment for Nigerian users.
