U.S. President Donald Trump has once again stirred international controversy by accusing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of prolonging the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
Speaking during a televised interview on Wednesday, Trump claimed that Zelenskyy’s refusal to negotiate with Russia is unnecessarily extending the devastating conflict, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions since it began in 2022.
“Zelenskyy could have ended this war a long time ago,” Trump said. “But he keeps pushing for more weapons and more aid instead of sitting down at the table and making a deal. People are suffering because of his stubbornness.”

Trump, who has declared his intention to run for president again in 2024, also criticized the Biden administration’s continued financial and military support for Ukraine, describing it as “a blank check strategy with no end in sight.”
His remarks sparked backlash from several quarters, with critics accusing the former president of undermining international solidarity with Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly insisted that negotiations are impossible without a complete withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of their territorial integrity.
President Zelenskyy has not officially responded to Trump’s comments, but aides close to the Ukrainian leader dismissed the statements as “uninformed” and “dangerous.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has drawn criticism for his views on the war in Ukraine. During his time in office and after, he has frequently voiced admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s leadership, a stance that continues to raise eyebrows on the global stage.
