The Federal Government on Tuesday presented crucial video and documentary evidence in the ongoing terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed IPOB.
At the resumed hearing before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, the prosecution team led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, tendered video and documentary evidence through its first witness, a Department of State Services,DSS, operative identified as PWAAA.
PWAAA, who testified behind a protective screen, told the court that he had served in the DSS for about 18 years. He said he was part of the team assigned to arrest Kanu at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Lagos in 2015.
During the proceedings, a video recording of Kanu’s interrogation by DSS operatives was played in open court.
Also read aloud was a statement the defendant made on October 15, 2015, where he admitted to establishing Radio Biafra and registering it in London.
In the statement, Kanu disclosed that the radio station was not registered with the National Broadcasting Commission,NBC, because he believed it was unnecessary.
He also said he was interrogated without legal representation, which he claimed was against his rights.

Kanu explained that his mission was to fight for the emancipation of the South East, South South, and parts of Benue and Kogi states.
He argued that freedom fighting was not a crime but a fundamental right, even in Nigeria.
The IPOB leader denied any involvement in violence, stating that no evidence had linked him to any violent acts.
The prosecution also brought into court four suitcases recovered from Kanu’s hotel room at the time of his arrest.
The suitcases contained personal items, including radio transmission equipment allegedly used for Radio Biafra.
Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, did not oppose the admissibility of the items. Justice Omotosho admitted and marked them as exhibits.
The trial has been adjourned to a later date.
