Celebrated Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said she has no regrets on her decision to have twins through surrogacy.

In a candid interview with WithChude Live, the award-winning writer opened up about embracing non-traditional motherhood and the stigma that often surrounds it.

“There is no way I am going to lie and claim a baby that I did not birth myself, and I think it’s wrong,” she said. “I have zero regret about surrogacy. My children are my precious gift.”

Adichie emphasized the importance of honesty and transparency, particularly for women who feel pressured to hide their experiences with alternative parenting paths.

“I want more women to feel less ashamed of talking about reaching motherhood through non-traditional means, especially in a judgmental society,” she stated.

The Half of a Yellow Sun author also shared insights into her writing process, admitting that despite her literary success, she still grapples with uncertainty about how her work will be received.

Reflecting on her widely acclaimed novel Americanah, she said, “I’m sure about what I want to write but not sure about how people will receive it. I thought people would hate Americanah and react negatively.”

She expressed similar sentiments about her latest work Dream Count, noting that publishing it as a parent added a new layer of vulnerability. “It was my first book as a person who has children, and I am so grateful for everything,” she added.

Adichie’s openness continues to challenge cultural taboos and redefine what motherhood and literary success look like in a modern world.
