In a groundbreaking move towards green transportation, the Benue State Government has launched Africa’s first fleet of solar-powered electric vehicles, aimed at reducing transportation costs, creating jobs, and curbing carbon emissions.
The initiative, unveiled Monday in Makurdi, is a partnership with Esse Mobility, a Nigerian tech firm led by founder Okey Esse, who described the launch as a first-of-its-kind for the continent.
She disclosed that the solar taxis—fully powered by sunlight—will operate initially within Makurdi as a pilot scheme, with plans to expand statewide by the end of the year.
“From now to December, the target is to roll out 500 of these units. This will create at least 8,500 new jobs,” Esse said, citing plans to set up an assembly plant in the state.
Each vehicle is equipped with built-in security and tracking systems, ensuring passenger safety, while remaining environmentally friendly and cost-effective to operate. Despite being solar-powered, the vehicles are built to function even in rainy weather.

Governor Hyacinth Alia was praised for laying the groundwork for the innovation. The Managing Director of Benue Investment and Property Company , Raymond Asemakaha, hailed the effort as a strategic commitment to sustainable development and job creation.
“This step reduces reliance on fossil fuels, promotes eco-friendly transportation, and directly supports the state’s GDP growth,” Asemakaha said.
He emphasized that the adoption of solar technology marks a new chapter in Benue’s economy, moving toward sustainability, innovation, and environmental stewardship.
Business strategist Mrs. Theresa Abeda, who leads the Department of Business Development and Strategy at BIPC, noted that the vehicles will transform the state’s urban mobility while positioning Benue as a national trailblazer in renewable-powered transportation.
This initiative adds Benue to the growing list of Nigerian states exploring clean energy solutions in response to both economic pressures and the global climate crisis.
