Afrobeats megastar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has ignited a wave of national conversation after publicly asserting his Igbo heritage in response to a tribal comment on social media.

The award-winning artist declared, “I AM IGBO by blood,” in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, May 20, firmly shutting down an ethnic-based criticism of his ties to the southeastern Nigerian ethnic group.

The controversy began after a user with the handle @Yakbel posted a divisive message cautioning the Yoruba-born singer against close affiliations with the Igbo community. The post read in part:

“Davido just dey carry Ibo full body, until when dem betray am before e rest… You can never satisfy Ibos ooo.”

The tweet, laced with ethnic generalizations, implied that the Igbos — one of Nigeria’s three largest ethnic groups — were untrustworthy, and warned Davido that his association with them was misguided.

Rather than ignore the post or respond with hostility, Davido replied with a calm but powerful declaration of identity:
“Lol, I AM IGBO by blood.”

His comment immediately went viral, garnering hundreds of thousands of interactions within hours. Many Nigerians, across ethnic and political lines, praised the singer’s stance as one that promotes national unity and rejects divisive tribalism.

Cultural commentators and fellow entertainers also applauded the artist for modeling inclusive values. Media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Nollywood actress Ini Edo, and singer Flavour all shared Davido’s response, encouraging fans to embrace Nigeria’s diversity.

While Davido is widely known to hail from a prominent Yoruba family — the Adeleke family of Osun State — the singer has on several occasions hinted at his mixed heritage. His mother, Veronica Adeleke, reportedly had Igbo ancestry, and Davido has maintained strong cultural ties with the southeastern region over the years, both in his music and in personal relationships.

Beyond his recent comments, the singer has collaborated with numerous Igbo artists such as Flavour, Phyno, and Peruzzi, and is known to perform in fluent Igbo during live shows. His embrace of different Nigerian cultures has long been a hallmark of his public image.

Davido’s remark comes just a day after he hosted iconic highlife musician Elder Bright Chimezie at his Lagos residence. The veteran artist, known for his blend of traditional Igbo rhythms and storytelling, was recently cited by Davido as the inspiration behind his verse in the song With You.

The meeting was widely celebrated online, especially among older fans who recognized the significance of a new-generation Afrobeats star honoring a highlife pioneer. The moment also highlighted Davido’s broader efforts to bridge Nigeria’s cultural heritage with its evolving music industry.

In a country often fractured along ethnic lines, Davido’s embrace of his Igbo identity — in the face of tribal baiting — is being seen as a powerful reminder that Nigeria’s strength lies in its unity and cultural diversity.

His response not only shut down a moment of online hostility but also opened up a larger conversation about identity, tolerance, and national pride.
