The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister, Nyesom Wike, says the FCT Administration has plans for a comprehensive reform of the capital city’s transportation sector to  enhance commuter safety.

Wike disclosed this in Abuja on Friday during an inspection of completed transport infrastructure projects, including the Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals, and an access road leading to the Giri District, all of which are now ready for commissioning.

The minister explained that the reforms, which are currently being finalized by a dedicated committee, would come into effect before the official inauguration of the newly completed terminals, which forms part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s second anniversary in office.

“Obviously, a lot of things will happen in the transport sector in the FCT. There will be a lot of reforms,” Wike said. “As part of our security measures, we must know those involved in the taxi business, what colour their vehicles should be, and how they are identified, so that if anything happens, we can easily trace it.”

The planned reforms are expected to address the proliferation of informal motor parks, with the administration promising to relocate such parks and introduce designated, well-managed terminals for both buses and taxis.

Wike commended the contractors behind the project, stating that while he had pointed out some areas for improvement, the overall quality met the expectations of the FCT Administration.

“We are committed to supporting local contractors who can deliver good work for the benefit of Nigerians,” he added.

The Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals are part of a broader effort to upgrade urban mobility in the capital. In addition, Wike announced that two new terminals will soon be constructed in Bwari and Gwagwalada, further expanding the reach of the FCT’s transport infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Central Area Terminal is still under construction, with no announced timeline for its completion.

The initiative is seen as part of the Tinubu administration’s broader push to modernise Abuja’s infrastructure, reduce roadside congestion, and enhance the safety and convenience of transport services.
