Russia’s national team coach, Valery Karpin, has stated that the absence of Nigerian forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman will not significantly weaken the Super Eagles ahead of their international friendly on Friday.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated clash at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Karpin acknowledged the quality of the missing players but maintained that Nigeria still poses a serious challenge.
“Of course, I would have preferred to test our squad against Osimhen and Lookman—two of Nigeria’s best players,” Karpin told Russian outlet Komsomolskaya Pravda. “But their absence certainly does not make Nigeria fundamentally weaker.”
The Super Eagles will face Russia without several first-team regulars. Besides Osimhen and Lookman, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has also left out Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey from the travelling squad.
While the official reasons remain undisclosed, reports suggest a combination of injury management and tactical rotation ahead of World Cup qualifiers.
Despite the high-profile absentees, Nigeria enters the match on a high. The team recently clinched the Unity Cup title after a dramatic 5–4 victory on penalties against Jamaica, following a 2–2 draw in regulation time.
The friendly match is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. Nigerian time on Friday, June 7, and serves as a critical test for both nations as they prepare for upcoming continental and global competitions.
Karpin said the Super Eagles’ depth and emerging talents make them a strong opponent regardless of who is on the pitch. “Nigeria has a rich pool of talent. Even without their top names, they’re fast, physical, and tactically unpredictable.”

This will be one of the rare meetings between the two national teams, and it marks a significant opportunity for Russia to measure its squad’s progress against a dynamic African powerhouse. Nigeria, on the other hand, aims to use the fixture to test new players and build squad chemistry under coach Chelle’s leadership.
Meanwhile, fans and analysts continue to monitor the situation surrounding Osimhen and Lookman, with both players reportedly focused on fitness and club commitments following grueling seasons in Europe.
Osimhen, who plies his trade with Galatasaray, has been the subject of transfer speculation linking him to several top clubs across England and France, while Lookman recently made headlines with his UEFA Europa League final hat-trick for Atalanta.
Despite these absences, anticipation for the friendly remains high, with both teams expected to field competitive lineups. Russia’s goalkeeper Matvey Agkatsev and Nigeria’s young talents such as Gift Orban and Bright Osayi-Samuel are among the key players to watch.
As preparations continue, football fans across both nations look forward to what promises to be an engaging contest—and perhaps the start of a budding football rivalry.
